Dayton 24/7 NOW: Dayton: One of 10 areas chosen for Accelerator for America award

DAYTON, OH (WKEF/WRGT) - The city of Dayton is one of 10 cities in the U.S. chosen for the Accelerator for America project. The city will receive technical support along with $50,000 in funding to help build up the infrastructure needed to administer a large-scale financial assistance program for residents hit hard by the coronavirus.

The grant was announced Sunday night during Springfield native John Legend's Father's Day special.In addition to Dayton, 10 other U.S. communities will also have the same program implemented: Atlanta, Georgia; the state of Connecticut; the state of Rhode Island; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Birmingham, Alabama; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Salt Lake City, Utah; Louisville, Kentucky, and Austin, Texas.

Accelerator for America is part of the Angeleno Card financial relief program, originally started in Los Angeles. Since it's creation it has distributed approximately $25 million in assistant to roughly 70,000 LA residents.
